Here we are after the first week of the tour. I've jotted down some thoughts for you as a kind of road diary. I have lots of stories to tell, but before we kick off, I have a question for all of you: have you any idea of how big Canada is and what it's like to cross it on a bus? Maybe it's because I'm European, or because I'm from provincial Italy, but this is not what I'm used to. I've been looking at nature for over three hours now, the odd farmhouse here and there, an oil pump and a straight road that never ends... I guess no-one complains about the noisy neighbours round here and that's good news to me.... when I started mixing as a kid, I had to practice in the garage not to disturb anyone. Joking apart, the huge distance between houses, towns and people makes you incredibly friendly and loquacious when you meet someone new. It's a funny feeling for someone like me, who is basically shy. The whole communication thing has a different vibe. You probably get angry less often as there is less chance of finding someone you disagree with. Pretty odd.
After this introduction, I'd like to introduce you to my tour companions: Priscilla, Amy and Dan.
Priscilla is our precious bus. She's also called "the Snow Queen", on account of the bad weather she has to deal with every day. We met for the first time in Vancouver and it was love at first sight. she told me that she once had a relationship with Depeche Mode, carrying them around on a similar tour, but I managed to suppress any pangs of jealousy thinking that it's a real honour to be in the company of such a highly appreciated lady. But after the coup de foudre, the first anxiety attack. As I scrambled up the steps I suddenly realized what I was getting myself into: a 24 gig tour of Canada, moving around in a bus, in just a month. The kind of crazy thing you would expect from a rock band...
Priscilla has a bedroom for me, that would make a rapper happy: widescreen plasma TV, mirrors on the wall, a large comfy bed and countless satellite channels, yes I can pick up the hot ones, too. Perfect for aftershow entertainment. The room is in the back, right on top of the engine. Have you ever tried sleeping on top of a bi-turbo 500 HP engine, climbing up a steep mountain road on max revs? It's like being on top of a plane that's about to take off. Sure, it probably winds you up like Hulk for those little extra party pastimes, but, believe me, after the first 15-hour journey, the only thing I wanted to do was sleep. So I had to make my peace with the engine roar.
Priscilla has another 6 bunks and 2 bathrooms, a living room and a big kitchen area. In a word, Priscilla is the business. She always gives us a warm welcome and makes the travelling easy. Everyone has enough space and, when needs be, there's hot popcorn from a microwave oven, like at the cinema.
The second character is my Canadian tour manager, of Chinese origin, Amy Tang. Amy is a real trooper and a fine woman. She never asks for help and always manages to solve any problems that crop up, a kind of female Mr Wolf (of Pulp Fiction fame). Even when she has to carry her suitcase, which is as big as she is, she's the boss. Amy is also really sweet and incredibly helpful - and is really sexy when she decides to dress up for the evening with her pink shoes and high heels.
The third member of the band is Dan, our driver. He is an easy-going, cool, middle-aged gentleman. He's American and really professional, able to drive for 15 hours on two cups of coffee and a packet of crisps. He doesn't talk much, but it would appear he has a lot miles under his belt, something like 3 million! He has a marvellous farm house north of New York, we saw the photos on a laptop, with horses and stuff. Dan is our commander-in-chief, to all effects and purposes and he's the one who tells us when we've got to be where.
Priscilla has made us all feel at home and we're a little family of nomads drifting across Canada. I'm not quite sure what my role is, but I imagine I'm the kid, so I play my part.
It didn't take long for me to realize that on a bus tour, anything can happen. You can hit on snow and travel at 20 miles per hour for 7 hours, drive through a blizzard that feels like it's going to turn you over, the guy at the pump can get the fuel wrong, putting in petrol instead of diesel (which sure makes Priscilla thirsty), the temperature can drop to minus 28 centigrade and lots more. But we move on, taking the problems in our stride, one show after another. I can't give you a detailed report on all the gigs but I would like to thank all the promoters and clubs involved so far, because it's all been great! The first show in Vancouver really got me going. I was able to experiment musically, the dance floor thundered, the booth was close to the crowd and I really felt I was on the same wavelength as the people dancing. Fever in Edmonton was pure energy, 3 incredible hours, I played a new demo from my studio partner Alle and it was really wild, a great atmosphere.... Probably out soon on Pump-kin, so keep your eyes peeled. I want to play it again and I think this evening, in Calgary, it might fit in well. I know the club well, by now. The resident there is a crazy dude of Italian origin who looks like Mario Più (Hi Mario! speak soon!), the sound system is amazing, the monitors really get you in the gut and the bass feels like it's going to bring the house down.
Ok, we're 200 km from Calgary and it's time to end the first installment. I'm even learning to write! Amazing. Taking techno to the limit. PRIMO REPORT DAL BUS TOUR
Eccoci arrivati alla prima settimana di tour! Ho cercato di raccogliere un po' di idee e di raccontarvi quanto sta succedendo. come fosse il mio diario. Ho già molti aneddoti ed episodi, ma vorrei partire da una semplice domanda: avete idea di quanto è grande il Canada e di che effetto fa girarlo in bus? Forse sarò io che, da buon europeo - anzi, da buon italiano di provincia - non sono abituato, ma è da oltre 3 ore che non vedo altro che natura: qualche fattoria qua e là, qualche pompa per estrarre il petrolio ed una strada drittissima che pare non finire mai. Di certo nessuno si può lamentare per dei vicini rumorosi e. per me che ho dovuto iniziare a fare pratica nello scantinato di casa per non disturbare, è già una grande notizia! Scherzi a parte, queste grandi distanze fra case, centri e, in definitiva, uomini, porta ad essere incredibilmente felici e loquaci non appena si incontra qualcuno di nuovo: è una sensazione strana per me - che sono anche un po' timido - ma c'è un senso della comunicazione molto diverso. Probabilmente qui si hanno anche meno occasioni per arrabbiarsi, perché di fatto ci sono meno possibilità di scontrarsi con le persone. Strano, no?
Dopo questa intro, vorrei iniziare con la presentazione dei compagni per questa prima parte di tour: Priscilla, Amy e Dan.
Priscilla è il nostro caro bus. Amichevolmente viene anche detta "La Regina Delle Nevi" per le intemperie che sta affrontando giorno dopo giorno. Ci hanno presentati per la prima volta a Vancouver ed è stato amore a prima vista: mi ha detto che in passato ha avuto una relazione anche con i Depeche Mode, che ha portato in giro per un analogo tour, ma io non ho sofferto di gelosia ed anzi sono stato onorato di poter stare con una donna talmente apprezzata. Ma dopo il colpo di fulmine, è sopraggiunto il timore: è stato solo salendo gli scalini che davvero mi sono reso conto in che situazione mi stavo imbarcando: un tour di 24 date in Canada, girando in Bus, in un solo mese. Un po' da pazzi e un po' da rock band!
Priscilla ha per me una camera da letto molto rapper: schermo al plasma, specchi alle pareti, un grande letto comodo e innumerevoli canali satellitari (sì, anche quelli hot!) ed è praticamente perfetta per gli aftershow. La cameretta è sistemata nell'ultima parte di Priscilla, proprio sopra al motore: avete mai provato a dormire sopra un motore biturbo da 500 cavalli, magari in montagna, a pieno regime? Sembra di essere su una turbina o sopra un'aereo in partenza! Certo, magari per le attività collaterali (...) darebbe anche una gran carica e ti farebbe sentire Hulk, ma vi assicuro che dopo il primo viaggio di 15 ore volevo solo riposare e quindi ho dovuto abituarmi ai ruggiti.
Priscilla ha poi altre 6 cuccette, 2 bagni, un living room con cucina e un piccolo salotto. Insomma, la mia Priscilla è proprio una figata: ci accoglie calda, si viaggia bene, si hanno i propri spazi e, all'occorrenza, sputa anche pop corn caldo dal microonde...Come fossimo al cinema!
Il secondo personaggio è la mia manager canadese di origine cinese, Amy Tang. Se già il nome non vi ha già spaventato abbastanza, dovreste conoscerla: Amy è una roccia che sta conquistando il mondo ed è donna tutta di un pezzo. Lei non chiede mai aiuto, sa sempre come risolvere i problemi ed è una specie di Mr Wolf (avete visto Pulp Fiction?) al femminile: anche quando deve portare la sua valigia - che è alta almeno come lei! - non fa una piega. A parte questo, Amy è davvero carina è super gentile, nonché davvero sensuale quando decide di sfoggiare la sua mise da sera, provvista di scarpa rosa e tacco sexy.
Il terzo della banda è Dan, il nostro autista, un signore di mezza età pacato e tranquillo. Americano e superprofessionale, guida anche 15 ore con 2 caffè ed un pacco di patatine! Non parla molto, ma dal poco che abbiamo potuto capire ha molta esperienza e chilometri sulle spalle: 3 milioni vi bastano?!? Ha una meravigliosa fattoria a nord di New York - di cui abbiamo visto le foto sul laptop - con cavalli e quant'altro: Dan è a tutti glie effetti il nostro comandante assoluto, nonché quello che da i tempi.
Priscilla ci ha accolti tutti e siamo una piccola famiglia nomade che si muove per tutto il Canada: non so bene che ruolo ho io, ma presumo dovrei essere il bambino e quindi mi adatto.
Dal primo giorni di viaggio mi sono reso conto che in un bus tour può succedere di tutto: trovare neve e procedere per 7 ore ai 30 kmh, incontrare una tempesta di vento che sembra rovesciarci, il benzinaio che sbaglia a fare benzina, dissetando Priscilla di super e costringendoci ad uno stop forzato, temperature semi polari (anche meno 18!) e molto altro. Noi comunque procediamo tranquilli e maciniamo date: non riuscirò a darvi i dettagli su tutte le date, ma vorrei quantomeno fare un ringraziamento sentito a tutti i promoter e ai locali coinvolti finora, perché sono state serate super! La prima a Vancouver, poi, sarà anche stata l'emozione, ma mi ha davvero toccato: ho spaziato musicalmente, la pista tuonava, la consolle era a diretto contatto con il pubblico e vivevo le loro stesse emozioni nei passaggi, bellissimo! Quella al Fever di Edmonton, poi, è stata pura energia, 3 ore di viaggio incredibile, ho anche potuto provare un nuovo provino che il mio socio Alle mi aveva passato ed ha ribaltato la pista, ha un'atmosfera bellissima...Credo che presto uscira per Pump-Kim, tenete gli occhi aperti! Ho voglia di suonarlo ancora e credo che stasera a Calgary sarà l'occasione giusta, visto che conosco il club molto bene: il dj resident è un matto di origine italiana e assomiglia a Mario Più (Ciao Mario! Dobbiamo sentirci!), l'impianto è da paura, le casse spia rovesciano lo stomaco e quando escono i bassi sembra che il locale crolli!
Ok, siamo a 200 km da Calgary ed è ora di concludere questa prima puntata, anche la mia scrittura si sta rodando nel frattempo: com'è d'obbligo vi lascio con alcuni estratti dalla colonna sonora di questi giorni: - le nuove tracce degli Audio Vegas (myspace.com/audiovegas) per la Winter Music Conference sono un vero sballo, al limite con la techno: sono superorgoglioso di averli per Pump-kin! - il potente stereo di Priscilla suona invece Mario Biondi e il suo album "A Handfull of Soul" ed è la colonna sonora preferita di Dan - non mancate il nuovo dei Freaky Brothers "Tension" nella versione originale: una bomba electro, fino ad ora la mia "Tune of The Tour"!
Hi everyone, Next year, I'm taking a bus-ride round Canada. It's always been a dream of mine actually to tour a country on a bus, like a rockband! I'm starting in Vancouver on 19th January and will end up in Windsor, a month later. I'll be touching 24 different clubs and I'm really looking forward to this. There's a compilation coming out as a kind of souvenir of the tour, produced by Pump-kin and SPG especially for Canada and my Canadian fans, though I'm sure it'll be available on import in most places. It's called "Benny Benassi cooking for Pump-kin, special menu" and has a great tracklist!
Next year, it would be great if some of you could vote for me on the Dj List at www.thedjlist.com....It's a monthly dj ratings chart and it's becoming more and more influential.
