Last piece of CD RELEASE news-- many of you have seen
that contagiously charming cat in the red zoot suit at
our shows busting some Crescent City buckjump...
that's BESTON (The No-Half Steppers, SAPC). But are
you down with his extensively delicious discography?

Schwee Michael Schwartz (UNITED SWINGDOM RECORDS) and
Beston Barnett (ART HURTS RECORDS) have joined forces
once again to release a rather unique record inspired
by the recently-resurrected melodic sketches of the
obscure 19th century British ethnomusicologist and
    nomadic lepidopterist SIR ALBUS MANCHILD.
    http://siralbus.org.uk/

Spanning a gamut of global genres from Gypsy, Dixie,
and Carribean to African, Asian, and Arabian, the
album presents some especially smokin' and swingin'
arrangements of Manchild's itinerant impressions in a
jazz quartet format. The tales will spare no thrills
and chills-- the jams will leave you harder than
Chinese calculus and damper than a Dublin fog. We
invite you to read more, download samples, and get the
    grits and goods at:

    Enjoy!!!!!!

  • CRITICAL Christmas Benefit for New Orleans Musician Relief Fund

    Dearest Kith, Kin, and Cohort,

Ain't it something how a few months can fade
out the frustration that we felt so fiercely from
Hurricane Katrina? This holiday season, while we wish
each other health and happiness, we'd like to send out
some extra love to our brethren musicians, their
families, and the tight-knit communities which support
them down in the Crescent City as they face the
longterm challenges of picking up the pieces left
behind by the storms. This thursday night at the
TEMPLE BAR in Santa Monica, CA please join
CRITICAL BRASS with Plas Johnson and the
Gumbo Brothers as we cohost the New Orleans Rising
Christmas Party to raise the roof while we raise
assistance and awareness. We'd like to recruit you
and your best boots to parachute into hot pursuit
of our pan-planetary musical roots, to sample the
splendiferous fruits of ubiquitous horns and beats in
cahoots gettin' freaky with makeshift mutes sassin'
off crazy coots in supersonic zoot suits, shaw'nuff
should be a hoot and we'll send all the loot to those
in dire need of tribute. We are delighted to announce
that all proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians
Hurricane Relief Fund, a certified 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization dedicated to aiding local
    musicians affected by Katrina. Tax-deductible
donations will be effectively distributed directly to
those in need-- for more info

p.s. some links and info on our most excellent cohosts:

    http://www.plasjohnson.com/
Aficionados know him by name, but almost anyone
exposed to music is familiar with his playing. Plas
Johnson is the purring sax solo on Henry Mancini's
famous "Pink Panther" movie theme song. His is the
saxophone counterpart to Harry "Sweets" Edison's
trumpet on Neal Hefti's signature music for "The Odd
Couple" TV series. Plas is the featured soloist heard
on countless albums, including those of such artists
as Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Barbra
Streisand, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald,
Linda Ronstadt and Sarah Vaughan. Plas' recent
recordings include his own albums "Hot, Blue and Saxy"
and "Evening Delight". You may also find him around
town occasionally with his own group, at jazz
festivals world-wide, and in the recording studios.
Plas Johnson combines some of the best elements of
jazz and blues and is admired and emulated by sax
    players worldwide.

    http://www.thegumbobrothers.com/
This Venice-based quartet has made it their mission to
    spread bayou-influenced, psychedelic swamp-funk
throughout the southland and beyond. In addition to an
extensive funk repertoire, The Gumbo Brothers will
keep your booty movin' with more than twenty original
songs, many of which will be on their debut cd to be
released later this year. The band is Johann Stein on
guitar and vocals, Greg Sonnier on bass and vocals,
Reggie Longware on drums and percussion and Jon
McBride on electric piano, organ, and saxophone.
