Must admit that we’ve been more than a tad smitten by this set of tracks since finding them nuzzling in our friends request box at the tail end of last week. ..Seems Australia’s Gravity Pirates have a more than informed awareness of the less obvious currencies of 80’s underground sounds that one suspects much rooting has been undertaken of an older sibling or parents well heeled record collection. ..These darkening beauties shimmer and cascade amid amorphous atmospherics, brooding and darkly beautiful they appeal like classic era Situation 2 releases of yore, the hazily shimmer toned psych trimmings that attach to the opening moments of ‘This Way To The Cargo Cult’ soon blossom with a resplendently neutered anthem detachment that much recalls ’seduction’ era Danse Society cross wired with a youthful Theatre of Hate, sparsely post punk and edgy in texture - hell its enough to have you digging out your long overcoats and backcombing your barnet... ’Float So Wide’ is similarly invested such albeit this time rephrasing the sound as though something committed to tape by an impromptu studio collaboration between the Fixx and Gene loves Jezebel. ..Currently unsigned which we find something a little bemusing they come into to their own on stuff like ‘Exposure Of My Senses’ - a gloriously thing, subtly disarming and blessed with a wonderfully cantering dynamic that’s dappled and bowed by lunar crests of softly stirred delicate euphoria and haloed in fragile frost tipped glazes which to these ears touch on the succulent pop thrill of the Associates as though here found shimmying up to John Foxx. ..That said in a class of its own is the simply divine and sublime purr of ‘Backtrack’ - magnificent and majestic, poised and peerless as it swirls through the celestial ether just barely out of touching distance all the time cast with the same classicist drill that borders between something revelatory and effervescently ethereal as was once the sole domain of the Chameleons in full flight.
