  • Quick Update

Ok, sorry about not writing every week - I've been busy playin!  I'm also working on quite a few other things, which I'll tell everyone about someday when they're done, but here's the newest.  2009 marks ten years since I finished our first record, which had some terrible recordings that are still floating around out there, but it had a few great ones as well.

I've noticed in the last ten years since the MP3 revolution, there are some TERRIBLE recordings floating around on the ever-growing masses of sub-par demos, never intended to be heard by the public.  They just fly through cyber-space like viruses, just waiting for some poor ears to think it's a real recording.

So I've got all the best recordings I've made in the last ten years... because I made them... and I know which ones are the best... because I made them.  Sadly, it's dawned on me that about half of them were never released.  I have quite a few new songs in the making as well, so keep an eye out for that.

In the meantime, the last two years are the first of my life that I've been performing on almost every week, and lately I've been playing a few times a week.  I feel strongly to anyone who has or hasn't seen a show in the last few months, you'll be pleasantly surprised - I don't know when or where, but we got good.  :)

    I'll be in touch.

  • I'm back baby!!!

Ok, so I've got a lot of updates I call and tell my friends, but I haven't really updated this in a while.  I kinda thought for... oh, about a year or so, that no one read these because no one was on MySpace because Facebook was better, so on and so forth.  Then, around 9:00 this morning when I finished our new banner design, as I sipped my cup of coffee and ate my egg soufle sandwitch, I listened to come great music I'd never heard and I realized, I think people might read these.  I haven't updated the site since Christmas... It's not wise to spend too much time updating something no one reads.  So I'm doing a test.  Does anyone read these???  If  you do, I promise I'll update you on all the wonderful things in the world of Stephen Speaks, at least once a week.  Probably on Sunday nights before bed.  If you all write me here and tell me, I promise I'll write you once a week and tell you what craziness we're into now.  Like, I think Jay (my best friend / studio partner) is about to blow up and amaze the world.  I actually will brag that I produced the record when Jay is the biggest artist in the world, and I think he's going to be on the radio for the first time tomorrow morning.  He's the dude that looks like the president of the free world in that green picture on our top friends.  We made that today.  Ok, trailing off...

    So, anyone read these?

    A Good Pair Of Socks
    By Rockwell Ryan Ripperger

I found a pair of socks in my closet tonight - a good pair.  They're a patchwork of fuzzy ends on the inside, a quilt of black and green on the outside, and gentle elastic around the top to make sure they can rest just above my calf.  They bunch up well when I let them loose around my ankles to give my skin a breath of fresh air.  Up until tonight, I've only worn them snowboarding, in which case I needed big fuzzy socks to keep my freezing toes warm.

In fact, it's recently dawned on me that I am now waring the only good pair of socks I own.  I have a ridiculous array of overpriced pants and jackets, and only one good pair of socks, lost in my closet.

All my other socks are cheap fixes for when I've left my undergarments at home during a two week trip.  I realized tonight, for whatever reason, it's never registered in my mind that socks are one of those things worth the money.  I survive on a balance between extravagant desires and strong moderation, but I never understood why older people in my life always wanted good socks for Christmas, or why they gave them as gifts.  Enlightened by my current level of lower leg comfort, which this time of year is usually cold or jammed inside large fuzzy slippers that make my ankles sweat, I now realize that I haven't felt this nice before bed since those old people bought them for me when I was a child.  Except for the times when I had freezing toes strapped into snowboard boots, which I think probably dulled the effect of warm fuzzy socks.

I wouldn't hesitate from buying an old friend of mine a drink if I ran into them in a social gathering, which could easily turn into an expensive night if a lot of people at that particular gathering thought I was their friend, but for whatever reason, in my entire life, I've only spent money on quality socks when I knew my feet would be mistreated.

I'm only buying quality socks from now on.  Even if I'm on tour and I forgot my socks.

It makes me wonder how many other areas of my life could bring such obvious comfort with such ease, but are getting overlooked because of something much more extravagant and much less practical.
