Bio
Josh Rose wishes he knew exactly where his music comes from. Growing up in the sparsely populated U.P., it would be hard for him to draw any specific conclusion. When you spend your formative years with little access to any musical events, with modest surroundings, and with the only radio station in town hawking hair bands to the end of time, it might have been tough to grow as a writer and musician. But since he decided to put his mind to all this singer songwriter stuff, Josh has realized that his songs speak to the person who feels that there still are things left to say in music, that a new song is an awesome use of space, and that the singer songwriter did not die with Jim Croce. So where do his songs come from? From the ordinary things in life which make extraordinary statements. From the three largest Great Lakes, which were all within a forty minute from where he grew up. From the immigrant bred into the genes of all of us. From the moments that we wish we could take a second to enjoy. From science, literature, sports, and history. From the pastoral landscape of Michigan that dominates the horizon. From the billboard that blocks the view of that landscape. From government, religion, and all those other taboo subjects. From a west meets east philosophy. And the list goes on. But whether his songs are plucked from the air like lightning bugs held in an old Mason jar or whether his songs are polished like the ancient stones in the Flat River, the point is the songs are what they are, moments of passing beauty in the air between us. -

Just me doing the folk star thing. Once in a while my friend Oz plays drums and my good buddy Colonel may play some bass, but usually I'm solofied. -
Influences
Good souls, authenticity, books that have stood the test of time, music that expresses that test, huge smiles, stands of birches, fresh cut lumber, family, Mexican food, dry red wine, the first cup of coffee on a weekend morning, paper, other cultures, other people, other places, maps, the view of my backyard valley through my patio doors, out of business mega-chain stores, the north country, drives up north, dirt roads that I have never been on, swimming, fishing, any river that isn't brown, three of the five Great Lakes, lone trees (usually elms) rising in the middle of hay fields, baseball, football, basketball, running, the Straits of Mackinac, the Bridge that crosses those straits, any form of water craft from the largest freighters to the smallest paper sailboats, , people who display/ed enormous amounts of courage, people that make a difference, people who are not defined by a sport, rock faces, swamps, beaches, hidden lakes in the woods, my college professors, picnic lunches, shore lunches, ice cream, cold beers while sitting on the banks of a stream, stands of red, jack, or white pine, teaching, my students, my wife, my sister, my brother, my mother, my father (RIP), my friends, adventures, goals, thoughts, and dreams. REM, Peter Gabriel, Ben Folds, Bruce Cockburn, Bob Dylan, Morrissey, Paul Westerberg, Ryan Adams, Patty Griffin, Patty Larkin, Amos Lee, John Prine, Beck, Richard Buckner, Steve Earle, Todd Snider, Lawrence Welk, Miles Davis, James Brown, Everything but the Girl, Disco Duck, Oscar, Bert, Big Bird, Ernie, Snuffalufagus, Animal, and Gonzo, I'll admit it: 80's top 40 music. Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, F Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Kerouac, Pearl Buck, Henry Thoreau, Ayn Rand, Joseph Conrad, Charles Darwin, Henrick Ibsen, Aldous Huxley, Chinua Achebe, Bill Bryson, and, yes, Mitch Albom...everyone alive should read it. -
