From About The Age Of 6, SoulClap Started Listening To Music. Among His Early Influences Were A Lot Of His Moms Records. Marvin Gaye And Curtis Mayfield Were Always On Heavy Rotation On Car Journeys, While Artists Like Isaac Hayes, Barry White And Luther Vandross Got Sessioned On The Family Stereo.
Bitten By The Mosquito, SoulClap Went On To Get A Drum Kit. A local Radio Station Allowed Him To Play His Records And His Own Interpretation Of Hip Hop Beats. This Was The First Proper Exposure To Hip-hop And Proved To Be A Real Influence. Needless To Say All Their Albums Were Bought, Borrowed Or Copied As The Staple Musical Diet. The Way The Beats Were Made From Other Samples Grabbed His Attention.
Inspired By These Albums And Pete Rock "Mecca and the Soul Brother / Soul Survivor", SoulClap Went On To Get His First Set Of Decks. Nothing Special By A Long Shot. A Couple Of Sketchy Belt Drives With No Height Adjust, Rubbish Pitch Sliders, A Mixer With The Stiffest Fader And Real Thick Carpet Like Slipmats! Finally He Could Manipulate And Contort Sounds To A Degree Although Any Scratching And Beat Juggling Was Almost Totally Impossible Due To The Platters Being Like See-Saws.
Never The Less, Record Digging Soon Became A Habit, Scouring The Local Charity Shops And Market Stalls For Weird and Obscure Vinyls.
About This Time, SoulClap Started Making His First Beats, Put Them On Tapes And Spread It Around. Beats Such As 9th Wonder's, J-Dilla's And Especially DJ Premier Hugely Influential.
