Los Angeles-based Latin-ska band Viva Malpache was formed in 1997 by guitarist/keyboardist Roberto González, bass player Alan Lee, and drummer Esteban Ramírez, later joined by singer Giovanni Blanco, guitarist Leo Cajina, and percussionist Jesse Gutiérrez.
The band released a self-produced album called Greatest Hits, presented live at West Hollywood's Key Club in March of 1999. That same year, Viva Malpache successfully participated in the first Watcha Tour, a well-known Latin rock festival, playing along with local Los Mocosos among others. When Roberto González decided to leave the act, guitarist Fabian Ruiz took his place. ~ Drago Bonacich
